Doors: Adding Character to Your Rochester Home, Both Inside and Out

Doors-adding-character-to-your-Rochester-home-both-inside-and-out.jpgYour doors may not be the first thing you think about when you’re considering building a new custom home in the Rochester area. Your front door, however, will very likely be the first impression guests have of your home when they visit for the first time.

If you’re building a custom home, why would you want to have a generic front door? The entrance to your home is your first chance to make a personal statement of style. And the options are nearly endless. You can choose between a single or a double front door. You can opt for a traditional squared-up front door with simple, straight lines. Or you might select an entryway door with decopage windows to add a little flair. Perhaps a door with a transom and sidelight windows will give you the look you’re after (and let extra natural light into your entryway).  Or you could use color to make an impression.

Doors are more than passages from the outside of your home to the inside. Interior doors inside your home also add character and interest to rooms. Interior french doors allow you to separate spaces inside your home while still allowing light to pass through. They afford privacy without making your home feel “boxed in.” Sliding doors can also provide privacy and muffle sound when closed, and they have the advantage of not taking up space when the door is open. By receding into the walls, these “pocket doors” create an open passageway between rooms and allow you to move freely back and forth.

You even have options in the kitchenwith pantry doors. You can have a glass door that allows you to see into the pantry without having to actually enter it,or, if you prefer, you can have a solid wood door that provides a nice contrast (or complement) to your cabinets. We’ve even seen homes that use a chalkboard surface on the pantry door for keeping shopping lists and writing messages to family members. If you’re building a custom home, you can use your imagination to come up with a solution that’s practical for you and fits your sense of style.

We invite you to check out a few of the doors we’ve built into homes in the Rochester area. Maybe theses images will give you ideas of your own about the interior and exterior doors you’d like for your new home.

Webster, Ontario and Victor Census Reports

Posted by John Graziose on Mon, May 14, 2012 @ 13:05 PM

D and C article Page 1The census reports are in, and Webster, Ontario and Victor came back with flying colors.

You remember taking the census.  A year ago, it seemed like mindless questions to answer, questions that had very little to do with our daily lives.

How wrong we were. The census results give us a report on where we live.  Politics and budgets aside, the census results help us see change.

Take for instance a recent Democrat and Chronicle article.  Front page, no less.  Webster NY: “Suburban town is Monroe County’s fasting growing (area).” Ontario County: “Town’s populace grew by 43 percent.”

So what does that really mean for us in Rochester NY and her suburbs?  Basically, we’re growing up, and demanding New York State take notice.  We aren’t the sleepy little lake and wine region anymore.  We are the perfect mingling of work and play.  Commerce and Get-away-from-it-all.

Take for instance Webster NY. The Democrat and Chronicle article quotes a life long Webster resident.  “Webster now has almost everything residents need, from restaurants and retailers to grocery stores.  You don’t have to leave the town for much of anything.”

Ontario County can boast the same. The article quotes an economic development specialist “This is sort of the plan we’ve been working on for years to keep Ontario County as attractive a place as possible to do business, and as a result of that encouraging people to live and work in our county.”

A lifelong resident of Victor says “I remember when the population was so low that businesses didn’t really look at Victor as a viable market…But now more restaurants and businesses look to Victor as a new location.”

So what does that mean for us?  It means that living in Webster, Ontario, Canandaigua, and Victor means a short commute to work, and home to the lakes, vineyards, and outdoor activities we love.  That most people around the country only dream about.

Finger Lakes Region

Posted by John Graziose on Mon, Apr 23, 2012 @ 13:04 PM

New Homes Builder Canandaigua NYYears ago, I found myself living in Canandaigua NY. After I moved, I promised myself, I would be back.  I fell in love with the Finger Lakes Region. Let’s face it, Canandaigua NY is the whole package.  Tourism meets Norman Rockwell.  I’d be hard pressed to say which I season I like most.  Spring had an excitement of things to come. Summer was Finger Lakes water fun. Fall, incredible foliage, but Winter I think really was my favorite.

Every shop on Main Street decorates for Christmas.  The street light display at night shouldn’t be missed.  The whole town gets involved with activities.  One of my favorites is the community Messiah Sing-A-Long at the First Congregational Church. Imagine this 153 year old church filled with people who just want to be part of a big choir for the day. No experience needed.

The crowning jewels of Canandaigua NY are the century old mansions.  I told myself someday I would own one of these million dollar beauties.  Set up a B&B, spend my days vacationing in a town I loved, and going to every community event possible.  OK, a few flaws in my thinking. Plus, I forgot these things need to be heated.  Ugh.

Finger Lakes Regions Homes for saleStill, my thinking was “The Finger Lakes Region has it all, and I want to live there.”

I recently visited Sharon of Gerber Homes, in her Canandaigua NY model home. Suddenly it occurred to me.  You don’t have to work three jobs just to heat a beautiful Canandaigua NY home!

I visited The Sturbridge, Gerber Homes’ Canandaigua NY model. I was amazed by the attention to detail.  I loved the custom tile shower, the curved window in the Master Bedroom.

This new 2010 model home is Energy Star approved, a major plus for new home owners. It’s open floor plan lends itself easily to relaxing after a day on the Lake or antique shopping in town.

The Finger Lakes Region, especially Canandaigua NY is an up-and-coming location for both young professionals and retirees.  A short commute to Rochester or Buffalo, Canandaigua NY is the vacation spot where you live.

Canandaigua NY homesStop by and visit Sharon at her Gerber Homes model, noon-5:00, Wednesday-Sunday. Call (585) 259-7172 to ask questions. Then, take a drive down Main Street, and enjoy the Christmas lights!
